Restaurant Dinner Plates
What is the brown sauce dressing on the side of plates in fancy restaurants?
On these cooking shows on telly, and in fancy restaurants, sometimes when you order a starter or a salad, it comes with a brown or cream coloured sauce dribbled round the edge. I have the in-laws coming for dinner tonight and would like to impress them with my culinary skills. I am wondering what this sauce is so I can get some!

Sounds like it could be balsamic syrup, that’s used a lot, although it’s more black than brown. Either way, if you want something easy that will impress the in-laws, I’d go with that…
You just need to boil up around 200ml of good balsamic vinegar with about 40 to 50g of brown sugar (any sugar will work) Bring to the boil gently, and let it reduce by nearly half. Then drizzle some on to a cold white plate and place in the fridge for 10 mins. If it has set to a thick syrup-y consistency, then you’re good to go. If it’s still a little too runny, then boil for another minute or two and repeat.
