Confessions of a Poor Money Manager

Confessions of a Poor Money Manager

$11.99

“Abraham Lincoln once said, “You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.” This simple yet profound word of advice has never been more relevant than now. The average American today spends $1.26 for every dollar they earn and many families find themselves overwhelmed by mounting debt with no end in sight.> Like many Americans, C. Ashley Clayton and his family had a good income but often could not pay their bills. Poor choices, undefined priorities and no spending plan sabotaged their hope of financial freedom. When they made the decision to change how they handled personal finances they discovered a new sense of freedom in pursuit of their dreams, passions and values.> “Confessions of a Poor Money Manager” is Clayton’s personal story of how he and his family moved from financial bondage to financial freedom. It is refreshingly honest, sometimes humorous and engaging. His straight forward style and practical approach takes the edge off of the task of managing our personal resources. He manages to put a personal face on our culture of greed and entitlement and at the same time offers practical biblical principles and spending strategies that will stand the test of time.”

The Average Family's Guide to Financial Freedom How You Can Save a Small Fortune on a Modest Income

The Average Family’s Guide to Financial Freedom How You Can Save a Small Fortune on a Modest Income

$3.95

Bill and Mary Toohey are average middle income people from a small Iowa town. Bill has been employed for 23 years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and Mary has worked for 20 years as an Office Manager for a small psychological firm. They started saving and investing in 1991 when their net worth was $63,000. Eight years later their net worth was $467,000. In other words, their assets increased by an average of more than $50,000 per year during that period while their income (not counting dividends and capital gains) averaged about $65,000 per year. But it wasn’t always easy. They have three children, Colleen (24), Tim (22), and Meghann (14). Tim has been severely disabled since birth and despite the challenges of helping Tim cope with his chronic illnesses, the Toohey family has been able to achieve financial freedom on a modest income. They were able to build a sizable nest egg in eight years while encountering some of life’s biggest expenses during the period. They helped to pay for their daughter’s college education and wedding, paid cash for a new car, and made several expensive home improvements. Despite those major expenses the Tooheys still managed to save 46% of their gross income and were listed among the "Best Personal Finance Managers in America" in the December 1994 issues of Money magazine. The Tooheys’ story, in an article written by Bill, appeared in the April 1997 issue of Money magazine. Mary co-authored an article published in the February 1998 issue of McCall’s magazine. In May, 1997 Bill was invited to speak at Money magazine’s Elgin Project seminar series. Money magazine "adopted" Elgin, Illinois and brought in speakers with expertise in personal finance. Former President Bush kicked off the event. How did they do it? How do they think? How do they live? Is it possible to save so much and still have a decent life? Can my family do this? Get the answers to all these questions and more in a book written specifically for families with children who don’t earn big bucks.

The Good Manager: A Guide for the Twenty-First Century Manager

The Good Manager: A Guide for the Twenty-First Century Manager

$14.03

In times previous, managers were respected and idealized by those in the political, economic, and societal circles of our country. Employees felt a sense of trust in their managers, and managers a sense of duty to their employees. That feeling has largely dissipated. An increasing number of books, magazine articles, and newspaper columns have been written denigrating the managerial profession, blaming the average manager for the distrust in our political institutions, the collapse of our economic system, and the stresses in our societal compositions. It is not right, it is not accurate, and it is not fair. "The Good Manager: A Guide for the Twenty-First Century Manager"presents the six key attributes of a good manager. The most important attribute – the one that will most likely determine your success or failure as a manager – is the ability to be a good person, one who lives a decent and honorable life, who is incredibly kindhearted, controls the most destructive human emotions, tells the truth, does what’s right, and always looks for the good along the road of life. "The Good Manager" teaches the fundamentals of management by illustrating how a decent and honorable person can move along the intellectual/moral spectrum to become a good manager.

The It Manager’s Survival Guide

$43.11

Accessible, refreshingly candid, but above all helpful, this pragmatic guide addresses a real need by dealing with the problems that face the new IT manager. By providing a number of practical recommendations and approaches including how to make the transition from technical professional to manager and dealing with people, to giving advice and guidance on organization structure, architecture and planning approaches, this book covers a whole raft of issues essential to managing an IT unit. If you have chosen to move from the safe haven of technology to the unpredictable world of management, this book could make the difference between success and failure. "The IT Manager’s Survival Guide is well named. Aimed at the techie becoming an IT Manager it covers the many alligators of IT management – from legacy systems to managing vendors – in easy chunks with checklists. It also provides the new manager with help to get ahead of the game by including articles from experts on what is wrong with IT management and a set of short reviews of management theorists from Strassman to Mayo. I recommend this book for those who would like to buck the trend – the average tenure of an IT Manager is about 900 days – and run an IT outfit appreciated by customers and staff." Pay It Down!: Debt-Free on $10 a Day

Pay It Down!: Debt-Free on $10 a Day

$5.99

Jean Chatzky has been working with viewers of NBC’s Today show for a series on how to get out of debt once and for all. Her method, both on TV and in this book, is simple yet powerful: the key is saving just $10 a day that you currently waste. It doesnÂ’t sound like much – a movie ticket or lunch for two at McDonaldÂ’s – but $10 really can take you from debt to wealth in just a few years. And because it doesnÂ’t feel like an impossible goal, people are more likely to stick with ChatzkyÂ’s plan than an extreme regimen of spending cutbacks. Chatzky is focusing on debt because itÂ’s the single biggest threat to our financial health. The average American family has sixteen credit cards and high-rate debt of more than $8000, not even counting car loans and mortgages. They pay more than $1000 a year in interest alone. Debt makes people feel depressed and overwhelmed, leaving them without enough money for the truly important things in life – education, retirement, owning a home, feeling secure. Chatzky, one of AmericaÂ’s most popular personal finance experts, writes in down-to-earth, woman-next-door language about how to get started right away, without giving up the things that truly give you pleasure. She offers practical, accessible strategies to help readers find the money to pay off their bills, lower their interest rates, and improve their credit scores. Featuring real-life examples of people featured on her Today show series, Pay It Down can transform debtors into future millionaires.

The Good Enough Manager: The Making of a Gem

The Good Enough Manager: The Making of a Gem

$43.33

This book is based on a fundamental principle: Just as there is no such thing as a perfect parent, managing is inherently a human and fallible endeavor, mainly because managing occurs by and through human relationships. Granted, managers are not parents and employees are not children; however, as authority figures, leaders and managers carry the residue of our earliest authority relationships and the vestiges of these interpersonal encounters are continually, and often unconsciously, re-visited in new settings. Although it is tempting in our culture of perfection to believe that good enough is tantamount to mediocrity, getting by, or settling for something average or adequate, this simply is not the case. Quite the contrary, a good enough environment can provide a pathway to more creative and innovative actions, and lead to even better performance. Such an environment is established by a manager being open and responsive, suspending certainty, and embracing the unknown by interpreting and improvising in the moment. A GEM is very adaptive and fitting to our rapid 24/7 and increasingly uncertain business environment.

Jeffrey Reiner is a middle manager’s dream. Predictable, almost invisible, and lacking ambition, he’s held the same tedious job for eighteen years, typing up the calendar listings for a South Florida weekly. As the economy and the newspaper industry crashed around him, Jeffrey kept his head comfortably in the sand until he was terminated in the middle of his lunch hour. Suddenly Jeffrey is staring at a deadline of twenty-one weeks before his severance pay and unemployment benefits dry up and he has to figure out what to do next. Plunged into the bizarre world of unemployment, Jeffrey’s attempts at networking lead him to his slacker neighbors, an unorthodox state facilitator, and a 1-800 mental health counselor. What’s even worse is now that he has no job to fill the daytime hours, he can’t ignore the fact that his family life is unraveling: his wife communicates almost solely through detailed daily honey-do lists; his mother seems determined to get herself kicked out of her assisted-living facility; his teenage daughter has no use for him and seems wiser to the ways of the world than he’ll ever be; and his son has taken up a disturbing form of pest control to help make ends meet. Even his dog finds a way to let him down. With his job search going nowhere amid the wreckage of the American economy, Jeffrey has no choice but to push beyond his comfort zone. He takes on a string of ridiculous odd jobs for a guy known as "enterprising dude" that include dressing up as the Statue of Liberty and breeding fish in a tub of mud. But as Jeffrey stumbles from one comic catastrophe to another, he realizes that in opening up to the world, he no longer wants to go back to his safe, sheltered corner. Full of whimsy, wry humor, and surprising insight, "Nothing Happens Until It Happens to You "is a weird, wonderful journey of self-discovery that proves there’s life after the pink slip after all.

Trevor McKinney is a twelve-year-old boy who accepts the challenge that his teacher gives his class: to earn extra credit by coming up with a plan to change the world for the better — and to put that plan into action. The idea that Trevor comes up with is so simple and so naive that when others learn of it they are dismissive. What is his idea? Trevor chooses three people for whom he will do a favor. When those people thank him and ask how they might pay him back, he tells them they should each "pay it forward" by choosing three people for whom they can do favors, and in turn telling those people to pay it forward. Does his plan work? No. And yes — it works wonderfully, but only after it has seemed to Trevor that maybe all his efforts have been for naught. In the end, Pay It Forward is the story of seemingly ordinary people made extraordinary by the simple faith of a child.
